Moving to Paramaribo

Today we look at moving to Paramaribo in Suriname from Ljubljana in Slovenia. We highlight cost of living and other major differences likely to be experienced in our series of short blogs on moving between different international locations.
In Paramaribo people speak Dutch (official), English, Sranang Tongo, Hindi and Javanese. In Ljubljana people speak Slovene.

Paramaribo is the capital and largest city of Suriname. Ljubljana is the capital of Slovenia and its largest city. Paramaribo's major exports are gold, bauxite, sugar cane, rice, cacao, coffee, rum, and tropical woods. Cement and paint are manufactured in the city. Industry is Ljubljana's most important employer, notably pharmaceuticals, petrochemicals and food processing.

The overall cost of living rank in Paramaribo is 299 out of 300 global locations, which equates it with low cost of living locations.  An expatriate moving from Ljubljana to Paramaribo will experience a change in cost of living of -35.7%.
In terms of the hardship people are likely to experience, assessed in global terms, Paramaribo is ranked as a high degree of hardship location with a hardship index of 30% the same as Ljubljana.
