Moving to Dili

Today we look at moving to Dili in Timor-Leste from Khartoum in Sudan. We highlight cost of living and other major differences likely to be experienced in our series of short blogs on moving between different international locations.
In Dili people speak Tetum and Portuguese (official), Indonesian and English (working languages). In Khartoum people speak Arabic; Nubian and others.

Dili is the capital and largest city of East Timor. Khartoum is the capital of Sudan and of Khartoum State. Dili is the chief port and commercial centre for East Timor. Khartoum has a thriving economy. In recent years Khartoum has seen significant development, driven by Sudan's oil wealth. The center of the city is well-planned, with tree-lined streets.

The overall cost of living rank in Dili is 180 out of 300 global locations, which equates it with middle cost of living locations.  An expatriate moving from Khartoum to Dili will experience a change in cost of living of -6.9%.
In terms of the hardship people are likely to experience, assessed in global terms, Dili is ranked as an extreme hardship location with a hardship index of 40% the same as Khartoum.
