Moving to Rome

Today we look at moving to Rome in Italy from Chennai  in India. We highlight cost of living and other major differences likely to be experienced in our series of short blogs on moving between different international locations.
In Rome people speak Italian. In Chennai  people speak Hindi, English and at least 16 other official languages.

Rome is the largest city and capital of Italy. Chennai is the capital city of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. The economy of Rome is characterized by the absence of heavy industry and is largely dominated by services, high-technology companies (IT, aerospace, defense, telecommunications), research, construction and commercial activities (especially banking), and the huge development of tourism are very dynamic and extremely important to its economy. Chennai's economy has a broad industrial base in the car, technology, hardware manufacturing, and healthcare industries. The city is India's second largest exporter of software, information technology (IT) and information-technology-enabled services (ITES). A major chunk of India's car manufacturing industry is based in and around the city.

The overall cost of living rank in Rome is 44 out of 300 global locations, which equates it with high cost of living locations.  An expatriate moving from Chennai  to Rome will experience a change in cost of living of 25.2%.
In terms of the hardship people are likely to experience, assessed in global terms, Rome is ranked as a minimal hardship location with a hardship index of 10% compared to Chennai  with a hardship index of 30% which is a high degree of hardship location.
