Moving to Addis Ababa

Today we look at moving to Addis Ababa in Ethiopia from Prague in Czech Republic. We highlight cost of living and other major differences likely to be experienced in our series of short blogs on moving between different international locations.
In Addis Ababa people speak Amharic, Oromo, Tigrinya, Somali. In Prague people speak Czech.

Addis Ababa is the capital city of Ethiopia. Prague is the capital and largest city of the Czech Republic.
Addis Ababa has the status of both a city and a state. It is where the African Union and its predecessor the OAU are based. The economic activities in Addis Ababa are diverse. Prague's economy is based on various industrial sectors. Prague's industrial sector is split into aircraft engines, diesel engines, refined oil products, electronics, chemicals, food, printing, automobiles etc. Also a significant proportion of research and development is based in Prague.

Approximately one-fifth of all investment in the Czech Republic takes place in Prague city.
The overall cost of living rank in Addis Ababa is 289 out of 300 global locations, which equates it with low cost of living locations.  An expatriate moving from Prague to Addis Ababa will experience a change in cost of living of -38.4%.
In terms of the hardship people are likely to experience, assessed in global terms, Addis Ababa is ranked as a high degree of hardship location with a hardship index of 30% compared to Prague with a hardship index of 20% which is a some hardship location.
