Moving to Hanoi

Today we look at moving to Hanoi in Vietnam from San Diego in USA. We highlight cost of living and other major differences likely to be experienced in our series of short blogs on moving between different international locations.

In Hanoi people speak Vietnamese. In San Diego people speak English.
Hanoi is the capital and second-largest city of Vietnam. San Diego is the ninth largest city in the United States, second-largest city in California and 46th largest city in the Americas. Industrial production in the city has experienced a rapid boom since the 1990s in addition tourism, finance, and banking now play an increasingly important role. San Diego's economy is largely composed of agriculture, biotechnology/biosciences, computer sciences, electronics manufacturing, defense-related manufacturing, financial and business services, ship-repair, ship-construction, software development, telecommunications, wireless research, and tourism.

The overall cost of living rank in Hanoi is 265 out of 300 global locations, which equates it with low cost of living locations.  An expatriate moving from San Diego to Hanoi will experience a change in cost of living of -18.1%.
In terms of the hardship people are likely to experience, assessed in global terms, Hanoi is ranked as a high degree of hardship location with a hardship index of 30% compared to San Diego with a hardship index of 10% which is a minimal hardship location.

The economy has experienced rapid growth. Vietnam is in transition from a planned economy to a market-oriented mixed economy.

Currency: Vietnamese Dong (VND).

Country Inflation: 23.1% (2008 est.) 7% (2009 est.).

City: Hanoi is the capital and second-largest city of Vietnam.
