Moving to Tbilisi

Today we look at moving to Tbilisi in Georgia Republic of from Addis Ababa in Ethiopia. We highlight cost of living and other major differences likely to be experienced in our series of short blogs on moving between different international locations.
In Tbilisi people speak Georgian and Russian. In Addis Ababa people speak Amharic, Oromo, Tigrinya and Somali.

Tbilisi is the capital and the largest city of Georgia. Addis Ababa is the capital city of Ethiopia.
Tbilisi is a significant industrial, social, and cultural center. The city is also emerging as an important transit route for global energy and trade projects. Located strategically at the crossroads between Europe and Asia and lying along the historic Silk Road routes, Tbilisi has often been the point of contention between various rivaling powers and empires. Addis Ababa has the status of both a city and a state. It is where the African Union and its predecessor the OAU are based. The economic activities in Addis Ababa are diverse.

The overall cost of living rank in Tbilisi is 147 out of 300 global locations, which equates it with middle cost of living locations.  An expatriate moving from Addis Ababa to Tbilisi will experience a change in cost of living of 37.4%.
In terms of the hardship people are likely to experience, assessed in global terms, Tbilisi is ranked as a high degree of hardship location with a hardship index of 30% the same as Addis Ababa.

Location: Georgia is in South Western Asia, bordering the Black Sea, between Turkey and Russia.

Country Climate: Warm and pleasant; Mediterranean-like on Black Sea coast.

Country Terrain: Largely mountainous with Great Caucasus Mountains in the north and Lesser Caucasus Mountains in the south; Kolkhet'is Dablobi (Kolkhida Lowland) opens to the Black Sea in the west; Mtkvari River Basin in the east; good soils in river valley flood plains, foothills of Kolkhida Lowland.
