Moving to Colombo

Today we look at moving to Colombo in Sri Lanka from Singapore in Singapore. We highlight cost of living and other major differences likely to be experienced in our series of short blogs on moving between different international locations.
In Colombo people speak Sinhala, Tamil and English. In Singapore people speak English, Malay, Mandarin and Tamil.

Colombo is the largest city and commercial capital of Sri Lanka. Singapore is an island city-state. The great majority of Sri Lankan corporations have their head offices in Colombo. Some of the industries include chemicals, textiles, glass, cement, leather goods, furniture, and jewellery. In the city centre is located South Asia's second tallest building - The World Trade Centre. Singapore has one of the busiest ports in the world.

The overall cost of living rank in Colombo is 186 out of 300 global locations, which equates it with low cost of living locations.  An expatriate moving from Singapore to Colombo will experience a change in cost of living of -28.8%.
In terms of the hardship people are likely to experience, assessed in global terms, Colombo is ranked as a high degree of hardship location with a hardship index of 30% compared to Singapore with a hardship index of 10% which is a minimal hardship location.

Country Economy: The economy of Sri Lanka is famous for the production and export of tea, coffee, coconuts, rubber and cinnamon which is native to the country.

Currency: Sri Lanka Rupee (LKR).

Country Inflation: 22.6% (2008 est.) 4.6% (2009 est.).

City: Colombo is the largest city and commercial capital of Sri Lanka.

Cost of Living: Colombo has an overall cost of living index which equates it with low cost of living locations. The overall cost of living index is comprised of the prices for defined quantities of the same goods and services across all 13 Basket Groups. Colombo is currently ranked 276 overall, most expensive place in the world for expatriates to live, out of 282 international locations.
