Moving to Pretoria

Today we look at moving to Pretoria in South Africa from Belgrade in Serbia. We highlight cost of living and other major differences likely to be experienced in our series of short blogs on moving between different international locations.
In Pretoria people speak 11 official languages including English, Afrikaans, Sesotho, Setswana, Xhosa and Zulu. In Belgrade people speak Serbian.

Pretoria is a city located in the northern part of Gauteng Province, South Africa. It is one of the country's three capital cities, serving as the executive (administrative) and de facto national capital. Belgrade is the capital and largest city of Serbia. As the national administrative (executive) capital of South Africa, Pretoria is the seat of government and houses the headquarters of the main government departments and ministries. As the de facto capital city, it also hosts the foreign embassies and diplomatic missions. The city is a major commercial centre and an important industrial centre. Its main industries are iron and steel works, copper casting, and the manufacture of automobiles, railway carriages and heavy machinery. Belgrade is the central economic hub of Serbia, and the capital of Serbian education and science.

The overall cost of living rank in Pretoria is 145 out of 300 global locations, which equates it with middle cost of living locations.  An expatriate moving from Belgrade to Pretoria will experience a change in cost of living of 4.3%.
In terms of the hardship people are likely to experience, assessed in global terms, Pretoria is ranked as a high degree of hardship location with a hardship index of 30% compared to Belgrade with a hardship index of 40% which is an extreme hardship location.

Today we look at moving to Johannesburg in South Africa from Dakar in Senegal. We highlight cost of living and other major differences likely to be experienced in our series of short blogs on moving between different international locations.
In Johannesburg people speak 11 official languages including English, Afrikaans, Sesotho, Setswana, Xhosa and Zulu. In Dakar people speak French (official) and Wolof.

Johannesburg is the largest city in South Africa. Johannesburg is the provincial capital of Gauteng, the wealthiest province in South Africa, having the largest economy of any metropolitan region in Sub-Saharan Africa. Dakar is the capital and largest city of Senegal. Johannesburg is one of the 40 largest metropolitan areas in the world, and is also the world's largest city not situated on a river, lake, or coastline. Johannesburg is one of the world's leading financial centres and it is the economic and financial hub of South Africa, producing 16% of South Africa's gross domestic product, and accounts for 40% of Gauteng's economic activity. Dakar is the westernmost city on the African mainland and is a major regional port.

The overall cost of living rank in Johannesburg is 115 out of 300 global locations, which equates it with middle cost of living locations.  An expatriate moving from Dakar to Johannesburg will experience a change in cost of living of 3.2%.
In terms of the hardship people are likely to experience, assessed in global terms, Johannesburg is ranked as a high degree of hardship location with a hardship index of 30% the same as Dakar.

Moving to Durban

Today we look at moving to Durban in South Africa from Riyadh in Saudi Arabia. We highlight cost of living and other major differences likely to be experienced in our series of short blogs on moving between different international locations.
In Durban people speak 11 official languages including English, Afrikaans, Sesotho, Setswana, Xhosa and Zulu. In Riyadh people speak Arabic.

Durban is the third largest city in South Africa. Riyadh is the capital and largest city of Saudi Arabia. Durban is famous as the busiest port in Africa. It is also a major centre of tourism due to the city's warm subtropical climate and beaches. Riyadh is a large metropolis and is a focal point for both travel and trade.

The overall cost of living rank in Durban is 171 out of 300 global locations, which equates it with middle cost of living locations.  An expatriate moving from Riyadh to Durban will experience a change in cost of living of 8.1%.
In terms of the hardship people are likely to experience, assessed in global terms, Durban is ranked as a high degree of hardship location with a hardship index of 30% the same as Riyadh.

Moving to Cape Town

Today we look at moving to Cape Town in South Africa from Jeddah in Saudi Arabia. We highlight cost of living and other major differences likely to be experienced in our series of short blogs on moving between different international locations.

Cape Town is the provincial capital and primate city of the Western Cape, as well as the legislative capital of South Africa, where the National Parliament and many government offices are situated. Jeddah is the second largest city in Saudi Arabia after the capital city, Riyadh. Jeddah is the principal gateway to Mecca, Islam's holiest city, which able-bodied Muslims are required to visit at least once in their lifetime. It is also a gateway to Medina ,the second holiest place in islam. Cape Town is the economic centre of the Western Cape Province, South Africa's second main economic centre and even Africa's third main economic hub city. It serves as the regional manufacturing centre in the Western Cape. It also has the primary harbour and airport in the province. Jeddah is the most cosmopolitan and tolerant of all Saudi Arabian cities, hosting expatriates from all over the world who have made Jeddah their home. Economically, Jeddah is focussing on further developing capital investment in scientific and engineering leadership within Saudi Arabia, and the Middle East.

The overall cost of living rank in Cape Town is 149 out of 300 global locations, which equates it with middle cost of living locations.  An expatriate moving from Jeddah to Cape Town will experience a change in cost of living of 22%.
In terms of the hardship people are likely to experience, assessed in global terms, Cape Town is ranked as a high degree of hardship location with a hardship index of 30% the same as Jeddah.
