Moving to Rabat

Today we look at moving to Rabat in Morocco from Velletta in Malta. We highlight cost of living and other major differences likely to be experienced in our series of short blogs on moving between different international locations.
In Rabat people speak Arabic (official), Berber, French and Spanish. In Velletta people speak Maltese and English.

Rabat is the capital of the Kingdom of Morocco. Valletta is the capital city of Malta. Tourism and the presence of all foreign embassies in Morocco serve to make Rabat the second most important city in the country after the larger and more economically significant Casablanca. The Valletta peninsula has two natural harbours, Marsamxett and the Grand Harbour. The Grand Harbour is Malta's major port.

The overall cost of living rank in Rabat is 248 out of 300 global locations, which equates it with low cost of living locations.  An expatriate moving from Velletta to Rabat will experience a change in cost of living of -23.1%.

Country Climate: Mediterranean, becoming more extreme in the interior.

Country Terrain: Northern coast and interior are mountainous with large areas of bordering plateaus, intermontane valleys, and rich coastal plains.

Major Languages: Arabic (official), Berber, French, Spanish.

Major Religions: Islam.

Country Population: 31.4 million (2008 est.) 31.9 million (2009 est.).

Country Economy: The economy of Morocco is considered a relatively liberal economy. The services sector accounts for just over half of GDP and industry, made up of mining, construction and manufacturing, is an additional quarter. The sectors who recorded the highest growth are the tourism, telecoms and textile sectors. Morocco , however, still depends on agriculture which accounts for only around 14% of GDP but employs 40-45% of the Moroccan population.

Furniture & Appliance costs for furniture, household equipment and household appliances such as dvd player, fridge freezer, iron, kettle, toaster, microwave, light bulbs, television, vacuum cleaner, and washing machine is relatively less expensive compared to other cities with a rank of 206 out of 276.

Grocery costs for food, non-alcoholic beverages and cleaning material items such as baby consumables, baked goods, baking, canned foods, cheese, cleaning products, dairy, fresh fruits, fresh vegetables, fruit juices, meat, oil & vinegars, pet food, pre-prepared meals, sauces, seafood, snacks, soft drinks, spices & herbs is relatively less expensive compared to other cities with a rank of 207 out of 276.

Healthcare costs for general healthcare, medical and medical insurance such as general practitioner consultation rates, hospital private ward daily rate, non-prescription medicine, and private medical insurance / medical aid contributions is relatively less expensive compared to other cities with a rank of 214 out of 276.

Household costs for housing, water, electricity, household gas, household fuels, local rates and residential taxes such as house / flat mortgage, house / flat rental, household electricity consumption, household gas / fuel consumption, household water consumption, and local property rates / taxes / levies is equally expensive on average compared to other cities with a rank of 172 out of 276.
