Moving to Melekeok

Today we look at moving to Melekeok in Palau from Noumea in New Caledonia. We highlight cost of living and other major differences likely to be experienced in our series of short blogs on moving between different international locations.
In Melekeok people speak Palauan and English. In Noumea people speak French (official), Melanesian and Polynesian dialects.

Melekeok is a town in the State of Melekeok. Noumea is the capital city of the French territory of New Caledonia. Republic of Palau's Capitol Complex is located on a hill, northwest of the village of Melekeok. Noumea has experienced a major housing construction boom within the past decade. The installation of amenities has kept pace, and the municipality boasts a public works program.

The overall cost of living rank in Melekeok is 230 out of 300 global locations, which equates it with low cost of living locations.  An expatriate moving from Noumea to Melekeok will experience a change in cost of living of -29.5%.
In terms of the hardship people are likely to experience, assessed in global terms, Melekeok is ranked as an extreme hardship location with a hardship index of 40% compared to Noumea with a hardship index of 30% which is a high degree of hardship location.

Location: Palau is in Oceania, and consists of a group of islands in the North Pacific Ocean, southeast of the Philippines.

Country Climate: Tropical; hot and humid; wet season May to November.

Country Terrain: Varying geologically from the high, mountainous main island of Babelthuap to low, coral islands usually fringed by large barrier reefs.

Major Languages: Palauan, English.

Major Religions: Christianity, Modekngei (indigenous belief).

Country Population: 0.02 million (2008 est.) 0.02 million (2009 est.).

Country Economy: The economy of Palau consists primarily of tourism, subsistence agriculture, and fishing. Tourist activity focuses on scuba diving and snorkeling in the islands' rich marine environment, including its barrier reefs walls and World War II wrecks. The government is the major employer of the work force, relying heavily on financial assistance from the US.

Currency: US Dollar (USD).
