Moving to Nuuk

Today we look at moving to Nuuk in Greenland from Banjul in Gambia. We highlight cost of living and other major differences likely to be experienced in our series of short blogs on moving between different international locations.
In Nuuk people speak Greenlandic and Danish. In Banjul people speak English (official), Mandinka, Wolof and Fula.

Nuuk is the capital and largest city of Greenland. Banjul is the capital of The Gambia.
Nuuk is one of the smallest capital cities in the world by population. Banjul is the country's economic and administrative centre and includes the Central Bank of The Gambia. Peanut processing is the country's principal industry, but beeswax, palm wood, palm oil, and skins and hides are also shipped from Banjul's port.

The overall cost of living rank in Nuuk is 99 out of 300 global locations, which equates it with middle cost of living locations.  An expatriate moving from Banjul to Nuuk will experience a change in cost of living of 53.3%.
In terms of the hardship people are likely to experience, assessed in global terms, Nuuk is ranked as a high degree of hardship location with a hardship index of 30% compared to Banjul with a hardship index of 40% which is an extreme hardship location.

Greenland, Nuuk Cost of Living April 2010

Country Full Name: Greenland. Status: Self-governing part of Denmark.

Location: Greenland (part of the Kingdom of Denmark) is in Northern North America, an island between the Arctic Ocean and the North Atlantic Ocean, northeast of Canada.

Country Climate: Arctic to subarctic; cool summers, cold winters.

Country Terrain: Flat to gradually sloping icecap covers all but a narrow, mountainous, barren, rocky coast.

Major Languages: Greenlandic, Danish.

Major Religions: Christianity.

Country Population: 0.058 million (2008 est.) 0.058 million (2009 est.).

Country Economy: The economy og Greenland remains critically dependent on exports of fish, whaling and textiles and substantial support from the Danish Government, which supplies about half of government revenues. The public sector, including publicly-owned enterprises and the municipalities, plays the dominant role in the economy.
