Moving to Muscat

Today we look at moving to Muscat in Oman from Windhoek in Namibia. We highlight cost of living and other major differences likely to be experienced in our series of short blogs on moving between different international locations.
In Muscat people speak Arabic. In Windhoek people speak English (official), Afrikaans, German, Oshivambo, Herero and Nama.

Muscat is the capital and largest city of Oman. Windhoek is the capital and largest city of the Republic of Namibia. Muscat's economy is dominated by trade, petroleum and porting. The more traditional exports of the city included dates, mother of pearl, and fish. Windhoek is the social, economic, and cultural centre of the country.

The overall cost of living rank in Muscat is 243 out of 300 global locations, which equates it with low cost of living locations.  An expatriate moving from Windhoek to Muscat will experience a change in cost of living of -15.4%.
In terms of the hardship people are likely to experience, assessed in global terms, Muscat is ranked as a some hardship location with a hardship index of 20% compared to Windhoek with a hardship index of 30% which is a high degree of hardship location.

Location: Oman is in the Middle East, bordering the Arabian Sea, Gulf of Oman, and Persian Gulf, between Yemen and UAE.

Country Climate: Dry desert; hot, humid along coast; hot, dry interior; strong southwest summer monsoon (May to September) in far south.

Country Terrain: Central desert plain, rugged mountains in north and south.

Major Languages: Arabic.

Major Religions: Islam.

Country Population: 2.8 million (2008 est.) 2.8 million (2009 est.).

Country Economy: The economy of Oman is based on oil, although in recent years, proven oil reserves have been holding approximately steady, although oil production has been decreasing. Oman has made active plans to diversify its economy and is placing a greater emphasis on other areas of industry, such as tourism and natural gas. Oman is known for its popular tourist attractions.

Currency: Omani Rial (OMR).

Education costs such as creche / pre-school fees, high school / college fees, primary school fees, and tertiary study fees is equally expensive on average compared to other cities with a rank of 135 out of 276.

Furniture & Appliance costs for furniture, household equipment and household appliances such as dvd player, fridge freezer, iron, kettle, toaster, microwave, light bulbs, television, vacuum cleaner, and washing machine is relatively less expensive compared to other cities with a rank of 252 out of 276.

Grocery costs for food, non-alcoholic beverages and cleaning material items such as baby consumables, baked goods, baking, canned foods, cheese, cleaning products, dairy, fresh fruits, fresh vegetables, fruit juices, meat, oil & vinegars, pet food, pre-prepared meals, sauces, seafood, snacks, soft drinks, spices & herbs is relatively less expensive compared to other cities with a rank of 265 out of 276.

Healthcare costs for general healthcare, medical and medical insurance such as general practitioner consultation rates, hospital private ward daily rate, non-prescription medicine, and private medical insurance / medical aid contributions is relatively less expensive compared to other cities with a rank of 254 out of 276.

Household costs for housing, water, electricity, household gas, household fuels, local rates and residential taxes such as house / flat mortgage, house / flat rental, household electricity consumption, household gas / fuel consumption, household water consumption, and local property rates / taxes / levies is equally expensive on average compared to other cities with a rank of 137 out of 276.
