Moving to Jakarta

Today we look at moving to Jakarta in Indonesia from Georgetown in Guyana. We highlight cost of living and other major differences likely to be experienced in our series of short blogs on moving between different international locations.
In Jakarta people speak Indonesian and 300 regional languages. In Georgetown people speak English, indigenous languages, Creole, Hindi and Urdu.

Jakarta is the capital and largest city of Indonesia. Georgetown is the capital and largest city of Guyana.
Jakarta's economy depends heavily on financial service, trade, and manufacturing. Industry includes electronics, automotive, chemicals, mechanical engineering and biomedical sciences manufacturing. Georgetown is Guyana's largest city and it contains a large portion of the major businesses.

The overall cost of living rank in Jakarta is 96 out of 300 global locations, which equates it with middle cost of living locations.  An expatriate moving from Georgetown to Jakarta will experience a change in cost of living of 16.6%.
In terms of the hardship people are likely to experience, assessed in global terms, Jakarta is ranked as a high degree of hardship location with a hardship index of 30% compared to Georgetown with a hardship index of 30% which is a high degree of hardship location.

Major Religions: Islam.

Country Population: 228.6 million (2008 est.) 231.5 million (2009 est.).

Country Economy: The economy of Indonesia is the largest economy in Southeast Asia, is one of the emerging market economies of the world, and is also a member of G-20 major economies. It has a market-based economy in which the government plays a significant role by owning more than 164 state-owned enterprises and administers prices on several basic goods, including fuel, rice, and electricity.

Currency: Indonesian Rupiah (IDR).

Country Inflation: 9.8% (2008 est.) 5.0% (2009 est.).

City: Jakarta is the capital and largest city of Indonesia.

City Economy: Jakarta's economy depends heavily on financial service, trade, and manufacturing. Industry includes electronics, automotive, chemicals, mechanical engineering and biomedical sciences manufacturing.
Cost of Living: Jakarta has an overall cost of living index which equates it with middle cost of living locations. The overall cost of living index is comprised of the prices for defined quantities of the same goods and services across all 13 Basket Groups. Jakarta is currently ranked 132 overall, most expensive place in the world for expatriates to live, out of 282 international locations.
