Moving to Helsinki

Today we look at moving to Helsinki in Finland from Roseau in Dominica. We highlight cost of living and other major differences likely to be experienced in our series of short blogs on moving between different international locations.
In Helsinki people speak Finnish and Swedish. In Roseau people speak English (official) and French patois.

Helsinki is the capital and largest city in Finland. Roseau is the capital and largest city of Dominica.
The Helsinki metropolitan area generates approximately one third of Finland's GDP. GDP per capita is roughly 1.5 times the national average, making Helsinki one of the wealthiest capitals in Europe. The urban structure of Central Roseau is based on an irregular grid system of miniature proportions. Exports include bananas, bay oil, vegetables, grapefruit, oranges and cocoa, services.

The overall cost of living rank in Helsinki is 28 out of 300 global locations, which equates it with high cost of living locations.  An expatriate moving from Roseau to Helsinki will experience a change in cost of living of 51.2%.
In terms of the hardship people are likely to experience, assessed in global terms, Helsinki is ranked as a minimal hardship location with a hardship index of 10% compared to Roseau with a hardship index of 40% which is an extreme hardship location.

Location: Finland is in Northern Europe, bordering the Baltic Sea, Gulf of Bothnia, and Gulf of Finland, between Sweden and Russia.

Country Climate: Cold temperate; potentially subarctic but comparatively mild because of moderating influence of the North Atlantic Current, Baltic Sea, and more than 60,000 lakes.

Country Terrain: Mostly low, flat to rolling plains interspersed with lakes and low hills.

Major Languages: Finnish, Swedish.

Major Religions: Christianity.
