Moving to Georgetown

Today we look at moving to Georgetown in Guyana from Gibraltar in Gibraltar. We highlight cost of living and other major differences likely to be experienced in our series of short blogs on moving between different international locations.
In Georgetown people speak English and indigenous languages, Creole, Hindi and Urdu. In Gibraltar people speak English and Spanish.

Georgetown is the capital and largest city of Guyana. Gibraltar is a self-governing British overseas territory.
Georgetown is Guyana's largest city and it contains a large portion of the major businesses. The role of the UK Ministry of Defence, which at one time was Gibraltar's main source of income, has declined, with today's economy mainly based on shipping, tourism, financial services, and the Internet.

Country Terrain: Mostly rolling highlands; low coastal plain; savanna in south.

Major Languages: English, indigenous languages, Creole, Hindi, Urdu.

Major Religions: Christianity, Hinduism, Islam.

Country Population: 0.765 million (2008 est.) 0.767 million (2009 est.).

Country Economy: The economy of Guyana is mainly based on agriculture (production of rice and Demerara sugar), bauxite mining, gold mining, timber, shrimp fishing and minerals. Guyana is one of the poorest countries in the Western Hemisphere. Chronic problems include a shortage of skilled labour and a deficient infrastructure.

ECONOMY: Guyana's main economic activities are agriculture (producing rice and Demerara sugar), bauxite mining, gold mining, timber, shrimp fishing and minerals. Chronic problems include a shortage of skilled labor and a deficient infrastructure. Low prices for key mining and agricultural commodities combined with troubles in the bauxite and sugar industries have threatened the government's fiscal position and dimmed prospects for the future. Since 1999 the Guyanese economy has exhibited moderate economic growth based on an expansion in the agricultural and mining sectors, a more favorable atmosphere for business initiatives, a more realistic exchange rate, fairly low inflation, and the continued support of international organizations.

Grocery costs for food, non-alcoholic beverages and cleaning material items such as baby consumables, baked goods, baking, canned foods, cheese, cleaning products, dairy, fresh fruits, fresh vegetables, fruit juices, meat, oil & vinegars, pet food, pre-prepared meals, sauces, seafood, snacks, soft drinks, spices & herbs is equally expensive on average compared to other cities with a rank of 97 out of 276.

Healthcare costs for general healthcare, medical and medical insurance such as general practitioner consultation rates, hospital private ward daily rate, non-prescription medicine, and private medical insurance / medical aid contributions is equally expensive on average compared to other cities with a rank of 182 out of 276.
