Moving to Stanley

Today we look at moving to Stanley in Falkland Islands from Copenhagen in Denmark. We highlight cost of living and other major differences likely to be experienced in our series of short blogs on moving between different international locations.

Stanley (also known as "Port Stanley") is the capital and only true city in the Falkland Islands. Copenhagen is the capital and largest city of Denmark.
Stanley is the main shopping centre on the islands and the hub of East Falkland's road network. Copenhagen is the economical and financial centre of Denmark and also a strong business and economic centre in the Scandinavian-Baltic region.

The overall cost of living rank in Stanley is 43 out of 300 global locations, which equates it with high cost of living locations.  An expatriate moving from Copenhagen to Stanley will experience a change in cost of living of -13.9%.

Location: The Falkland Islands (Overseas Territory of the UK; also claimed by Argentina) are islands in the South Atlantic Ocean, east of southern Argentina.

Country Climate: Cold marine; strong westerly winds, cloudy, humid; rain occurs on more than half of days in year; average annual rainfall is 24 inches in Stanley; occasional snow all year, except in January and February, but does not accumulate.

Country Terrain: Rocky, hilly, mountainous with some boggy, undulating plains.

Country Economy: The economy of the Falkland Islands, previously heavily over-dependent on sheep farming (and historically whaling), has become more diversified in the last decades and now also has income from tourism and commercial fishing as well as a service base for the fishing industry.
