China's remarkable expansion in world trade is also due to foreign investment and has been an important factor in the growth of urban jobs. A long-term threat to growth is the deterioration in the environment - notably air pollution, soil erosion, and the steady fall of the water table. Beijing is recognized as the political, educational, and cultural centre of China, while Shanghai and Hong Kong predominate in economic fields. Dalian was originally an agriculture and aquaculture-based area. Aquaculture is well developed exporting seaweed, scallops, sea urchins and others to Japan, Korea and other countries. Dalian is the largest petroleum port in China, and also the 3rd largest port overall. Accordingly, it is a major centre for oil refineries, diesel engineering, and chemical production. It has thriving financial, IT and modern industries.
