Today I would like to discuss Macao in China. If you were to be sent to Macao on an expatriate assignment or if you were to relocate there, you are likely to meet people who speak Chinese (mainly Cantonese) and Portuguese (both official).
The cost of clothing and food and beverages is high. The cost of housing is very low. The cost of transport is low. The Macao Special Administrative Region is one of the two special administrative regions of the People's Republic of China, the other being Hong Kong. Macao's economy is based largely on tourism, much of it geared toward gambling. Other chief economic activities in Macau are export-geared textile and garment manufacturing, banking and other financial services. The clothing industry has provided about three quarters of export earnings, and the gaming, tourism and hospitality industry is estimated to contribute more than 50% of Macau's GDP, and 70% of Macau government revenue.
From a day to day comfort perspective, you are likely to experience some hardship. Be sure to negotiate an appropriate salary or allowance to compensate for the cost of living.
